Candid vs Traditional Wedding Photography: Do You Need Both?

Candid vs Traditional Wedding Photography: Do You Need Both?

When couples look for a candid wedding photographer in Bangalore, the first question is usually whether they still need a traditional one. For most South Indian weddings the answer is yes. The two do different jobs, and the gaps show when one of them is missing.

What a candid photographer does

A candid photographer works like a quiet guest with a camera. They follow the light and the people, not a list. The photos are the ones you didn’t know were happening: your father wiping his eyes during the kanyadaan, your friends losing it at the sangeet, the two of you sharing a look while the priest talks.

Candid photos are what end up on your walls and your Instagram. They also need a photographer who reads the room and stays out of the way.

What a traditional photographer does

A traditional photographer makes sure the record is complete. Every ritual, every relative on the stage, every group your family will ask for later. They work closely with the priest and with your elders, and they know the order of the ceremonies.

In a wedding with 500 guests, this is the person who makes sure your grandmother’s photo with you exists. Families notice when it doesn’t.

Why most weddings need both

They stand in different places. During the muhurtham, the traditional photographer is in front of the mandap for the ritual itself. The candid photographer is off to the side, catching your mother’s face. One person can’t be in both places.

Candid gives you the feeling. Traditional gives you the record.

When you can skip one

For a small registered wedding or an intimate engagement with close family, one good candid photographer can often cover it. For a reception with a long stage queue, traditional coverage is what keeps things moving. Look at each event on its own rather than the wedding as a whole.

What every Silver Clouds quote includes

Whatever mix you choose, every quote we send comes with the Silver Clouds Suite, written out in plain words. It includes your own wedding portal, a guest RSVP page with a guest list you can download, save the date designs, private galleries for every event within 24 to 48 hours, web copies of every frame we shoot, selfie search so guests can find their own photos, feedback you can draw right on a photo, two rounds of changes on every film, and live tracking of each delivery.

So the choice you make is only about the team. The rest comes with it.

Questions couples ask us

Is candid photography more expensive than traditional?

It usually costs more per photographer, because of the editing involved. Your total depends on how many events you have and how many people cover each one.

Can one photographer do both candid and traditional?

For a small event, yes. For a full wedding day, the two jobs need people in different places at the same moment.

Do we need candid coverage for every event?

Not always. Many couples keep candid for the haldi, sangeet and wedding, and use traditional coverage for smaller rituals.
