In India, a save the date is almost always seen on WhatsApp. It sits in a family group between good-morning messages and forwarded videos. So the best save the date ideas aren’t about fancy printing. They are about a card that reads clearly on a small screen in a second.
Start with your own photo
A photo of the two of you makes people stop scrolling far more than a template with flowers. Pick one where both of your faces are clear at thumbnail size. Wide, beautiful landscape shots often don’t work. On a phone the two of you become two small dots.
If you’re doing a pre-wedding shoot, ask your photographer for a few frames with open sky or a plain wall above you. That’s where the text sits.
Make it tall, not wide
A tall card fills a phone screen. A wide one shows up as a thin strip. A 4:5 shape, like an Instagram post, works for WhatsApp, Instagram and printing.
Say three things, clearly
Your names, the date and the city. That’s it. The venue, the timings and the dress code can go in the invitation or the RSVP page later. If an uncle has to zoom in to read the date, the card isn’t working.
Names, date, city. Everything else can wait.
Send it at the right time
For a wedding in town, send it three to four months ahead. For a destination wedding or when people travel from abroad, send it five to six months ahead, so they can book leave and tickets.
A few ideas that work
- A big “Save the Date” in a serif font over a full photo.
- Your names in script with the date stacked underneath.
- A cream card with a small photo, like a printed invitation.
- A movie-poster style for couples who like something playful.
